Studio Juction

I love this kid's bed in a wardrobe. Ultimate cubby.
I have always been a believer in each space being designed for a particular purpose. A 'sleeping space' instead of a bedroom. A place entirely dedicated to sleeping. I would love to have a house where there was a sleeping space and a dressing space. Separate functions in specifically thought out spaces.

This sleeping space is another good one. House in Plum Grove SANAA.

Sometimes new spaces seem so empty when they have no connection to any built past. I'm going to visit a space tomorrow and cast my eyes over some plans for it's new life. The paint was scraped off the other day to reveal brass window frames and oak doors. It was once a place called 'Lacrosse town couriers'. Ha. A 'Lacrosse The Planet' sticker was once on its doors.

Architecture isn't just building new things, from scratch, things that are seen as a single entity. I like to believe it's also an act of analysis, a carefully considered intervention into a landscape, into an existing fabric. A response.

A couple of years ago, in a lounge in a giant house in Albert Park, a few of us sat around and watched Elvis. It was his live comeback performance in 1968. 'Elvis' was up in big red lights and there he sat, on a platform in a sea of (older than they were when he did blue suede shoes) girls, performing and smirking his best smirk. In head to toe black leather.
Romy and I were about to have a Safari Party, and 'tiger man' got us all welled up with excitement. Romy was pondering writing a story about planning your funeral, and for hers, we are going to have her name, big, spelled out in lights.

Romy comes home in 17 days. Excellently soon.

I'm 28. It was my birthday on Monday, I had an amazing day.

I recently aquired one of the most precious pieces of vintage I have ever found. A gorgeous cotton 50s wedding dress. I'll show you once I've had it dry cleaned and the zip replaced!

Still hanging on, waiting for the landing. I have been dreaming so many vivid dreams the last couple of weeks. Some good, some bad, some horrific.
Being caught between life and death was probably the one that has stayed with me.
I have to land, somewhere, anywhere and know where I am going.
Sitting on my beautiful porch this week with a dear friend over some plum wine on ice with lemon, a discussion of the future and what it holds took place. Seems they are coming thick and fast, these discussions, these days. Speaking with Lorelei last week about what constitutes 'Adult Behaviour' was another of these discussions.
Still, alighting the train when the inspectors appear at 8:21am and being late for an appointment this morning probably means I have a way to go, with the whole Adult Behaviour business.

What a ride.
Did someone say 'saturn returns' behind a disguised cough?
It seems the quarter life crises just melded into Saturn returns.
Saturn was always my favourite planet when studying the solar system.
I guess because it was the prettiest.
But now its coming 'round again in all its icy glory I wonder if all this 'returning' will actually go on until 29.5yrs approaches.

In other news.
t&a tuna pasta. Everyone has a tuna pasta recipe. Some tomato-y some lemony. Ours is salty goodness and quick. I really do eat this once a week.

-The discussions about being elderly between the bus driver and his four
freeloading passengers on their way to the club to play the pokies at 10:30am.

-The breath of wind before the train enters into view in the subway.

-New beginnings after burying old hurts.

Things I dislike about today;

-Being disarmed and under prepared for coincidental run in's.

-Burials and goodbyes. Watching the dirt fall upon a little loved one to
the point where they are gone from all view forever.

-The way the house creaks and moans and thuds like there are one
thousand creatures inhabiting its skin.

-My constantly running nose.

Warning: long-winded update afoot.

I've been a busy bee. Trying to get out and about. Get in contact with old friends. The birthday season is almost upon us. One or two per weekend for the next two months. So many Librans and Scorpions. It was Gen's birthday last week and above is the little present of a terrarium I made. Must be something in the air. Trying to bottle up spring perhaps?

Off to Sydney this week to complete the Costume Design for Kelly's Blues. It's being shot over the weekend, but I'm handing over to wardrobe and coming back for the wedding of the year. Yes! Emma and Cass!

Gordon Grove is coming along. A few hiccups with the old bugger, creaking and sloping while being built, but nothing a bit of extra time, steel, and concrete can't fix. We found our crystal taps and got them fixed*. Next, finalising tiles (this country is a drought for beautiful tiles). We got some old/new stock from De Fazio in Brunswick for the boy bathroom. A dusty box of 21 geometric patterned tiles scouted out by my client. Excellent. Otherwise we've had a bit of trouble matching some tiles to our 70s-ex-toorak-mansion-ceramic Villeroy & Boch double basin, toilet and shelves. After hitting the pavement numourous times, sifting through pool tiles and loose tiles in dusty shops in Malvern and Prahran, we found some amazing new Italian tiles from Urban Edge in Richmond. They are thick and have a gorgeous uneven crazed glaze. I'm waiting for some swampy ceramic pool mosaics from Brisbane. Oh lord Brisbanites are slow. Don't they want to SELL THEIR TILES? Then. Handles. Then- Joinery! Exciting.

Unfortuneately university and I didn't work out. Again. The above was a factor and not having a studio had a role to play. But mainly heartbreak was the key to abandonment. I wish I was one of those people that could channel their hurt and grief into a tangible force and fight on! Alas. Next year will be the year of travel and university. It's just been three months of heartache.

Trotksi & Ash is on the go now again though and I feel like I can remain in control of little fun projects for a while. Lauren is a genius. And Romy remains our European correspondant. COME BACK SOON!

Whilst doing some research for my Preston project I found this amazing wheat field project by Agnes Denes in Brooklyn. Planting in inhospitable environments to create new borders is a major part of my approach to the project. It reminds me of a story Gerald, our old neighbour at Bowen Crs. used to tell us about his mother strolling through wheat fields in Bruswick on the hill.

What a weekend. What a week. I'm glad August has been and gone. September is going quite well so far. Like the tulips in the concrete garden on my street. They sit there behind the chain wire fence, so big and waxy. Early in the morning the little silver haired woman emerges and waters her garden liberally. I'll post a picture sometime I hope.

I think my project is becoming more resolved in my mind. I wish I was one of those people that could work in layers, layers of drawings and a plethora of models. I think I let things sit. Like the pot of bolognese that's sitting on my stove. Micka's grandmother's recipe. It's been bubbling away for hours. Perhaps 6? My project sits, veiled in a heady steam of cloves and bay leaves.
Hopefully it turns out to be as elegant and considered as a good bolognese...

Murray visited on the weekend. I surrendered to the party (a voodoo party- as seen above) and enjoyed every minute when I put a stop to thinking about all the things that I could be doing (or procrastinating from) and all the things that have weighed heavy on my mind for the last little while.

Is it too weird? This new view? I was getting frustrated with the ugliness of the old, but maybe the new is kind of crazy and too sophisticated?

This is why I only cut my hair once a year. I can never decide on what on earth to do. Disasters always follow the 'do whatever you think' hairdresser encounter.

A haircut would be nice though. I think I just like the wash though, I've always been a sucker for a pat...

I just stumbled across the work of François-Xavier and Claude Lalanne. This beautiful blog showed me the way. My google reader is getting heavy. But, now we have the internet at home (it only took two months! iinet!) I can keep up. Possibly the blog of the week really. So lovely.

Today I bought a little 60s formica topped table to double as a desk for my room. Working from the bed was getting tiresome. I would like a golden rhinoceros though. I don't imagine it would ever even be remotely possible in any way to get tired of sitting down to work in the belly of a golden rhino.

Look at this! Lovely Pen gave me a pretty sparkly clutch! We joked that if you click the clasp three times and say Home Sweet Home you would get there faster than if you clicked your heels. There are lots of others in the shop. I think I touched them all, in the prettiest of vintage fabrics.

I've been traipsing around looking for fixtures and fittings for the Gordon Grove project. Around eBay too which has been helpful. Not as helpful as having one of these stores in Melbourne would be. So many lovely things. We are using a lot of delicate fixtures to balance out some of the honesty of the materials. A balance of delicate and raw. Any tip offs from the blogesphere?

I've got sugar on my face. It's encrusted there from making some sticky lemon squares. I baked them in small loaf tins so that I could make sure every one had a crunchy chewy edge. I love the edges. When I was little I would just eat the cheesecake crust, the ones where your mum used to crush up biscuits and stick them together again with melted butter. Delicious.

I found this blog today. It's full of little things that make me happy.

I've been spending so much time on eBay, looking for 70s shoes, furniture for Jack's warehouse and furniture, fixtures and fittings for my Northcote project which will finally be under construction soon. It's a strange world on eBay. People spell things funny, the images are sideways and you cross eyed with insufficiently focused phone photographs.

I looked at a pretty house yesterday. It's kinda small for 4 people, and I have never lived around there. But the street is really nice, it reminds me of the narrow streets in Balmain in Sydney. I hope hope hope we get it. We've applied. In total we have applied for 5 houses in 2 months. We really are going crazy.

I'm pretty busy at the moment. I've been working on a short film, set in 1974 (outside of Sydney) doing the costume design. It's really amazing researching archives of photos, families all in matching flares, 60s nanna's in psychedelic patterned flower kitchen clutching cord clad children. Great!

The last thing I feel like doing at the moment is looking for a house. But this one looks alright, might be too far away though. I think I'd like to have the 70s wood panelled studio as my room. Really, all I want is one of these... (via aesthetically pleasing)

Why am I still in bed at Midday on a Wednesday? Lazy. Well a little, yes. But mostly it's because of my new friend Boris. Boris is a complex ovarian cyst the size of a tennis ball. Nice. Hungry? I think not. I'll know more next week about how we 'lose' Boris, if only it was as easy as giving the wrong directions to the party, hopping in a cab, and hoping he can't find it.
I was feeling, quite frankly, preganant. Tender, nauseas, bloated, generally tired and emotional. Of course this isn't possible because of the medication I am on for everything else, so I decided to get it all checked out, and we found Boris.
Boris is an ex tennis player, drinks beer, has gas, likes to prod with what I can only imagine is a rabbit ear TV antennae and lives in my lower abdomen.

I guess Ill be on the internets a bit more this week. Ill try to post a bit more. Apologies for my absence, friends, bloggers (and clients!!!).

The trouble with renting is that it's hard to stay somewhere longer than a year. We have been told that our house is for sale. Our future is once again uncertain!!! It was only a year ago that we got notice to vacate at beloved bowen. And so it begins. It seems that there are a few more options as last year we were in the clasp of a brutal rental crisis and there was next to nothing on the market, but now doesn't look quite so bad. New houses are always a little bit exciting, this house was such a compromise as we were right at the end of our 60 days with nothing to go to. Hopefully we find a magnificent palace where we can all fit and happily rest our weary year-per-house heads.
I'm dreaming of wallpaper and shell lanterns and cosy corners. Really all we want is space for more than one of us to lounge at a time, a landlord that does things like fix our back door within a day when it has fallen off its hinges- decayed, and a kitchen where you can reach the cupboards!!!!

I found the Sartorialist a little dry for a while there, pretty suits and conservative Milan shoots but nothing that really sparked my interest. Upon going back today though, there was a February treasure trove of mixed prints, messy layers and winter inspiration!
